 Smartphones and PDA users are more concerned with theft than hacking

According to a recent WStore survey, users of smartphones and PDAs are more concerned about losing their mobile computing device, or having it stolen, than they are about the risks posed by viruses, hackers, and other IT security problems.

The threat of viruses and hacking may occasionally grab the headlines in the press, but it appears to be a minimal concern to users; only 15% of respondents identified this as an actual threat. Of greater concern was that their handheld might attract unwanted attention, with 32% saying they worry about it becoming a target for muggers and/or thieves.

Among those respondents who do not currently use a mobile computing device, there were several main reasons cited for not having one. These ranged from "handsets are too expensive" (30%), fears of work invading personal lives (35%), and a reluctance on the part of employers to provide devices for their workforce (37%).

 Symantec acquires MessageLabs to extend it presence in the SaaS segment

Symantec Corp. has announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire MessageLabs. Under the terms of the agreement, Symantec will acquire MessageLabs for a purchase price of $695 million in cash, subject to foreign currency adjustments, payable in £310 million Pounds Sterling and $154 million US Dollars.

MessageLabs generated $145 million in revenue during fiscal year 2008, ending July 31, 2008 and grew by more than 20 percent over the prior fiscal year. The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close by the end of the 2008 calendar year.

With the acquisition of MessageLabs, Symantec gains a leadership position in the rapidly growing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) segment and strengthens its lead in the messaging security market.
